“A gem of an inn rises to an even higher level of excellence.”
As visitors to the 1740 House each year since 1991, we have seen the inn through several transitions. It has always been one of our favorite inns yet since Shaun and Linda Buckler acquired the inn earlier this year, it has become the best it’s ever been from our experience of 3 nights of August 11-13. A beautiful location on the Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, the inn itself is quiet, peaceful, comfortable and beautifully appointed. The rooms are comfortable and very attractive, each facing the river with a patio or deck. A beautiful pool surrounded by a patio provides a great place to relax and we spent much of our time at the inn simply enjoying our surroundings. While the inn itself is beautiful and always has been, what sets it apart even more now is the hospitality offered by the Bucklers who have made every effort to provide the very best in caring for their guests. They are gracious and helpful without being intrusive. New under their acquisition of the inn is a full course breakfast and each day it was different and delicious. Those of you who have visited in past years will be happy to know that coffee is now available at 7:30. We started visiting the 1740 House when Harry Nessler was the innkeeper and provided the very best in hospitality. We cannot help thinking that he would be very proud of his inn that has returned to being the very best a B&B could be.
“1740 House was a most fortunate find”
It had been 6 years since visiting Bucks County, and when invited to a friend’s wedding, we needed to search for a place to stay and the 1740 House was a most fortunate find. The place is centrally located in a most pleasant setting. Our room was comfortable and well appointed; a small private deck was the perfect place to enjoy the peace and quietness offered, and a large picture window was a wonderful frame for the lovely view of the Delaware River. The entire Inn is wonderfully decorated and exudes Bucks County charm. The breakfast (included in the charges) was varied, well presented, and the location grand, whether indoors or outside on the terrace or by the pool. The quiet flow of the river as one enjoyed coffee/tea was the right way to begin the day. A walk across the river to a park with facilities for walking or bicycling is great. Not only would we stay at 1740 House again, we look forward to doing so in the near future, and have recommended it to family and friends as well.
“Wonderful”
It was my first stay at the Inn, though my sister has been visiting for the past 2 summers. The rooms are beautiful, the breakfast is delicious and the views of the river are not to be missed.
“A wonderful wedding weekend”
As a complement to our wedding in Perkasie, we arranged for our wedding party and parents to stay at the 1740 House for the weekend. What a wonderful experience! The setting was perfect–quiet, natural, and beautiful views of the river. The connected rooms allowed all of our wedding party to get to know each other–we walked the bridge to NJ together, relaxed by the pool, stayed up in each others’ rooms, and ate delicious breakfasts as a group. The large bridal suite was perfect for getting ready on the wedding day. We saw a newborn fawn in the brush across the canal, and went tubing on the Delaware in the morning. Best of all were the hosts, who went out of their way to make our weekend a success, helping us work out each of the personal requests to ensure that all of our guests had what they needed, including driving the ice cream cake to our reception themselves. Fantastic! We’ll definitely be back, and recommend it most highly!
“Better Every Year”
We started coming to the 1740 House 12 years ago. it keeps getting better every year. All the rooms open up to a private patio on the water. our room had a fireplace and was beautifully decorated. Breakfast is not to be missed. We can’t wait to return next year!
“I didn’t want to leave!”
The drive to the 1740 House alone set the tone for the rest of trip. The gorgeous scenery leading up to our destination was a preview as to what to expect once we arrived. Everything was so quaint and clean! The room was spacious and wonderfully decorated. The ambiance of the entire Inn was perfectly serene. The day started with a packed lunch on the terrace, followed by hours of relaxing by the pool, and ended with an amazing drive into Lambertville, NJ (a 10 minute drive) and a fabulous dinner at the Lambertville Station. My only complaint was having to leave! The absolutely delicious breakfast (of which I had seconds!) on the terrace overlooking the river was the perfect ending to the perfect getaway.
“Outstanding B & B”
Wonderful hospitality. Very accommodating and friendly. Terrific location. Would absolutely recommend.
“Wonderful get-away with excellent service” 5/13/2009
1740 House was a real treat. The look and the decoration were wonderful. We really enjoyed the balconies, the coziness of the room, the quality bed, the view of the river and the great breakfast on the patio in the morning. We wanted to stay another day or more! The small quaint town of Lumberville and the bridge to the island were so fun too.
“1740 House keeps getting better”
My wife and I have been coming to the 1740 House for three years and this is our first stay under the new ownership. It’s hard to imagine how the place could have improved but it has. Sure, it still has the placid river views, well-kept rooms and proximity to parks, dining and other activities. But now it also has a very personal, welcoming charm that makes it feel like a home away from home and not just another inn. The result was that we spent more time on site enjoying the late evening by the riverside, meeting other guests. The next morning they had even laid out a full breakfast as opposed to the continental fare that had been a staple of our previous stays. Overall, you couldn’t hope to find a better blend of hospitality, privacy, cleanliness and charm anywhere in the region. Highly recommended!
“Our visit to Bucks County”
We stayed for 3 nights at the 1740 in Lumberville Pa and had a wonderful visit. The inn is relaxed and is decorated in interesting American historical manner. The area where the inn is situated by the Delaware River is lovely. We were lucky that the blossoms were in bloom in the county; apart from that, the local foliage is a fine sight to see. Heartily recommended!
“We didn’t want to leave because it was so fantastic!. “
It’s been a long time since my husband and I had some downtime together, and we decided to visit the 1740 House! What a quaint and private place! While our son was on his 7th grade trip to Washington D.C., we were able to spend most of our time in room #16. The weather was raining most of the time, but we did not care. The view from all the rooms as well as ours was a picture perfect view of the Delaware and the trees. The birds were our music as the rain danced on the windows. What a lovely place to be!
We look forward to coming back soon either with or without our son.
“Lovely view of river, fantastically warm innkeepers “
We had a really nice stay here. The inn is large, clean, comfortable and friendly.
The family has a bunch of well-maintained mountain bikes (and helmets) that they happily loan to guests. We borrowed two bikes and crossed the nearby footpath to a river island, then continued on another bridge to cycle for miles on the trail on the Jersey side along the river. Very easy, very convenient.
Our bedroom was large, well-maintained and had a balcony looking right over the Delaware river and over the woods on the island across the way. The king-sized bed was firm. The bathroom was big and modern. When we opened the windows and the balcony door, we could hear the patter of raindrops on the leaves in the evening and the call of tons of birds in the morning. Sweet.
In the evening, the innkeepers built a fire in the big, living-room fireplace (it was a rare cool night for May), then made themselves scarce. It was very pleasant to read there.
The next morning, the country breakfast was tasty and ample. The dining room was lined with windows facing the river so the view was sweet.
We left feeling very well cared for.
“A charming B & B in with a lovely river view ”
Clean comfortable room overlooking the Delaware River. Lovely breakfast in a bright sun filled room. No dinner/lunch restaurant on site but several within minutes. The pool wasn’t open but it looked nice. Very cozy. Hope to go back soon.
“1740 House will take you in and you won’t want to leave. “
Took a trip to the New Hope area for what was supposed to be some shopping and sightseeing. Have stayed at 1740 before and remembered it was on the river and quiet so I booked it for a Saturday night. Not a huge fan of the usual B&B’s in the New Hope area as sometimes they are no grounds to enjoy, or you feel like you’re staying at your Aunt Edna’s house on a forced visit. As soon as my partner and I arrived at the 1740 House it was clear we were not going anywhere. The location, perfect, idyllic surroundings right on the river, ten minutes away from all the restaurants, shops and galleries of New Hope, which we did not even get to. The rooms are perfect, enough to remind you you’ve gone somewhere special, and not obnoxiously overdone, all with views of the river from a patio or balcony. Their outdoor space is where you know you’ve won. Pure relaxation. You can sit outside, not far from your room, looking out at the Delaware while enjoying a cocktail from the tavern. Chatting with other guests, or being as anonymous as you want. It just does not get better than that. What was supposed to be a one night stay turned into a two night stay where we basically did not leave the premises except to get the occasional lunch or dinner. Which we would get and immediately come back to the inn not miss a single second on the terrace enjoying the sun, river breeze, and company we met while there. This already fantastic weekend was only enhanced by the Innkeepers. The perfect couple running the perfect Inn, and I will guarantee you will come to the same conclusion. I know this is lengthy but I had to put it out there for all to enjoy.
“Memorable Weekend in Bucks County”
We met up for a weekend with friends in Bucks County and stayed at 1740 House on the recommendation of local friends. We were pleasantly surprised by the lovely rooms, beautiful location, very cordial Innkeepers, and the charm of the little hamlet of Lumberville. (New Hope was a huge disappointment, overrun with motorcycles and cheap beachtown-like shops, but a few great restaurants and the rest of Bucks County and Lambertville, NJ, is still worth a trip.) We look forward to returning to 1740 House!
“Wonderful”
We’ve been to the 1740 House many times. Our room, # 23, was large and beautifully decorated. The new owners are wonderful–extremely warm and helpful. They make what would be an enjoyable visit into an an exceptional vacation.
“Another Wonderful Stay”
The new inn keepers offered us a relaxing stay to accompany our room with a view of the Delaware. The room was spotless clean and appeared to have been designed to fit anyone’s mood. Abundant tranquility and a unique atmosphere abound. In the morning we were treated with smiles and delicious breakfast choices such as an egg strata, fresh fruit, oatmeal and various other choices. The dining area also overlooking the Delaware river and decorated beautifully. There are bikes to borrow and we went for a nice ride in the woods. We have gone many times for visits and this one was the best. It was so nice to be able to chat with the owners. Customer service at it’s finest.
“Romance on the River”
My wife and I have stayed at the 1740 House the past 3 years including this past weekend 4/11/2009. We both have hectic schedules and spend a lot of time with our children. This stay always guarantees us peace and quiet. The room was wonderful as usual. Overlooking the Delaware River with a fireplace and balcony is tough to beat. We especially love staying at the 1740 House in late winter early spring. It is much more serene. Innkeepers are wonderful people. They will take care of anything you need with a smile. They turned us on to a great Restaurant along the river and even made last minute reservations for us. The breakfast they prepared was delicious. We are already planning our next stay with 3 other couples. Highly recommended.
“First Time at a B&B”
We thought the 1740 House was the most relaxing place to be. We had good weather to enjoy the canal tow paths. the pedestrian bridge located nearby. and the balcony outside of our room. Ours was a short stay but we agreed that we would like to return again during the fall or summer months for a longer period of time. Our hosts made every effort to help us find restaurants, activities in the area, and to make us feel at home. I will be recommending this quaint inn to my good friends.
“1740 House Country Inn ”
My husband accompanied me on a business trip to Pennsylvania earlier this month, and we decided to celebrate his birthday by spending a few extra days in nearby Bucks County. A quick internet search produced The 1740 House Country Inn, located along the banks of the Delaware River, and claiming river views from every room. Shortly after our arrival, we were treated to an informal tour of the building and grounds, which included a look at several of the charmingly decorated rooms. It is, indeed, true that every room has a deck or terrace directly overlooking the Delaware River and the adjacent canal. This time of year, the river and trees are a bit stark, although we encountered many ducks, geese, and even a mink on our daily walks. The views will no doubt improve dramatically as the leaves and greenery fill in later in the month. I have never been in the hospitality business, but my husband and I combined have over 40 years in customer service, and let’s just say we have a set of expectations. We enjoyed some exceptional meals at a couple of the nearby restaurants, but easily the most memorable part of our stay was the genuine friendliness and grace of our hosts. We spent several delightful hours next to the fire in the living room and in the cozy adjoining tavern, getting to know the new owners.
